[COLOR=blue]Yet another dumb question from an another utter Noob…

I could have sworn that everything I read doing my research before buying the Mechwarrior 4 compilation set that it wasn’t supposed to run on XP, and yet, when I tried (just out of spite) to install it on my XP Home edition machine, lo and behold it worked! Sort of. There was an odd glitch while getting used to the feel of the game in the instant action mode that caused two of my ballistic weapons groups to fire continuously until the ammo was used up, while my energy weapons groups remained under the control of the joystick buttons. Has anyone had that happen before? And how is it that this version works on XP?
I need to get good on this version before joining you online and have tons of questions but this seems a good start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I think most of us are running it under some flavor of XP, so I don't THINK that's the issue, T.

Sounds like a controller problem. What are you using? Joystick? Keyboard?

I am using a Key Board/Joystick combo. The stick is a Logitech extreme 3d pro (the non force feedback version). In addition to the issue I mentioned yesterday, I also seem to not have the ability to assign functions to certain buttons on the joystick and basically had to take what the game told me I could have. Additionally, certain buttons (most notably the button hat fires my 3rd weapon group) doesn’t seem to function, forcing me to use the page up key on the key board. I know this button works on the joy stick because I use it successfully in other games. I do know that the constant fire issue occurred when I was using a brawler Uziel variant that I had created, but not with the standard config.
Thanks!

Thanks!

I had that problem for FOREVER. Mercs and any USB stick I used didn't get along for some reason. It wouldn't let me map any commands with that stick. What I finally had to do was dig out my serial MS Precision Pro and map with that, then carry the mapping over to my other joystick. I never did figure out what the deal with that was.

You should be able to use Logitech's mapping software to map keyboard commands through your stick. That'd bypass the problem, and Mercs will recognize the axes (x,y,z, throttle) just fine. Or should.

I don't know about the constant fire. I used to get that every once in a while, but when I hit the trigger on the offending group it would stop. I'd say try mapping your keys and see if it goes away.

Thanks Spiff! I’ll give the mapping software a try….now where the blue blazes did I put that CD ROM??!?

BTW-Since you’re obviously a Calvin fan, isn’t about time someone introduced the Transmogrifier as a weapon in Mechwarrior? How about a server that changes rules constantly like Calvin-Ball?

Thanks again!

Heh, Banzai used to run a server a little bit like that. I think it might have even been Ronin. All kinds of weird gametypes. smile.gif

If you can't get the CD, I'm sure it's on the Logitech site somewhere.
Thunderbolt
Thanks again, Spiff! The CD is somewhere on my desk, I’m sure…uh…it’s moving the piles of stuff that cover the desk that’s the really scary part!

If you think things can't get worse it's probably only because you lack sufficient imagination.

Okay, Fellas, it’s like this :
I uninstalled and reinstalled the joystick software. No go.
I did manage to find out that the number four button on my stick is messed up (Always in the “depressed” mode) so I am online with tech support trying to figure that one out. I haven’t had the firing by themselves bit happen since I uninstalled and reinstalled and regrouped my weapons to by pass the four button but there are still issues like I can’t get the shift button to work, so I am stuck firing groups one and two only. Maybe tech support will have an answer for that one too.
IN the mean time, I never could find any mapping software, Spiff, so I still can’t assign buttons to the function that I want, so, does anyone have a favorite joystick that DOES work with this game and can tell me where to find one? I can’t invest a lot, but I am tired of not being able to play this game without technical foul-ups.
Thanks for all the suggestions before.
As far as system requirements go I can run USB or standard serial sticks.

Did I mention that I am a retard? I found the mapping software, or profiler as it is called by Logitech. I think I can now map the buttons so that the offending # 4 button is out of the loop, which should hold me until I can figure out why it is sticking or I just replace the whole joystick, either one.

So, still accepting nominations for a decent stick, if anyone has a favorite. And thanks gain Spiff for the heads up on the profiler.

dry.gif Thanks Smoke...a tad out of my price range at the moment, but I will definitely add it to the list...actually it's the first one on the list!
