Lastnight I was putting an ethernet card in the girl's comp to hook it up to broadband. It's running 98SE at the moment.
During the install it asked for the 98 disc (which it didn't when I did it on my old one). Well we didn't have a disc so I tried to cancel out of the install and apparently during the course damaged or removed the following files.
vnetsup.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd
it gives me a SYSTEM.INI error on startup for each of these files and then after booting I get a popup message for an error with msnp32.dll
I tried uninstalling the card and then reinstalling it but that didn't fix - still asked for the disc.
I don't have a copy of 98SE and can't seem to find one. I have found the files available for download at Dynamiclink library but I am not sure where they actually go in the tree.
I have found some suggestions on deleting the entrys from the register but I would think you would still need the disc to put them back in. Another suggestion was to run the sfc (not sure what that is) from the Start-Run prompt.
Any suggestions on a resonable fix?
If I had a Windows cd I was hoping it would just check for the files and not worry about matching product codes or that i could download the single files and manually put them back - I have did something similar before.
Computer seems fine except for that.
