Full Version: Climbing slopes...

I've been messing around a bit lately with attempting to climb all sorts of un-climbable slopes in my Sunder. I find I can climb anything, but it takes some time. Are there any tricks anyone has learned to minimize the time it takes to climb "un-climbable" slopes?

Just practice. Go straight up the slope until you stop, then turn to the right until you move from 0 KPH. But don't turn back when the HUD registers movement - turn when the animation starts. Keep turning up and the mech has to complete the step animation. You can climb faster in a mech with slow acceleration, because the animation is slower and you have more time to turn the mech vertical....plus the assaults take "giant" steps.

Here's an "unclimbable" slope from the spawn on Canyon near the turret control tower. It took me 2:36 to climb up - about a dozen steps. Not a bad investment when you can spend the next 10 minutes sniping from safety...and then finishing with a DFA in a Daishi... smile.gif

Aye, once you master it, there's nothing to it. My group of Jade Falcons in NBT4 could get the whole team up the side of the cliffs on Canyon in about 30 seconds.

I never did get it to work for me, unless I got JJ's I try to avoid hills that require that climbing talent.

Arrgghh!
Well, one trick I think I learned, although it's not really a trick, is that it is easier to climb "un-scalable" slopes with mechs in the medium to heavy range. I've always had trouble getting lights and assaults up hills. It still doesn't make any sense to me how a light mech has trouble climbing the slopes but my guess is that since they move so fast they run into ruts quicker than I can avoid them. Personally, I despise JJ's and I usually do my best to stay away from canyons and such, unless I'm on the ledge of course.

Been doing some more testing. Its easier to go up a slope backward in my Sunder. I think that's because its a man-walker. Chicken walkers are probably easier to take up a slope forwards. Can anyone confirm this?

EDIT:

I just tried this in a Daishi and its easier to go up backwards as well. So, the lesson learned is...Always go-up backwards?
