Was fiddling about with Mechlab today, and it occurred to me that I probably will make some wrong choices when it comes to mechs and their options when I venture online; so, if you folks would be so kind, how about some suggestions? I know that I'll get waxed early and often, but would like some help to
not be a complete idiot, you know?
Thanks for everything!

I tend to like either a 2LBX 10 1ER Laser or 2 ER Laser 1LBX10 ShadowCat, depending on whether I plan to stay in range or mix it up close in.
Good Mix of speed and firepower, just make sure and use cover well.

A good place to look for Shadow Cat configs would be
here. or you can look at Thor configs
here. The Thor isn't a bad choice to start with either.

If you want to go fast, try a Raven with lots of streaks and as many med lasers as it can manage and still fire them all. However, Rat is probably right, go Thor, its tough and can carry some good stuff.

Yep, the Thor's a good one to start with. And, you can't go far wrong with a Bushwhacker.
Arrgghh!

Thor is good.
However, I perfer the Loki, I don't really know why...I just do.
The Hollander II is also a good one, u can put some serious firepower on that badboy.

Try a Sunder with 4 ERPPC and as many heat sinks as you can carry!

I always suggest either a Bushwacker or a Catapult for a player's first online 'Mech. Neither one are really dominant chassis in terms of getting a lot of kills, but ton for ton, both can take more damage and keep moving than just about anything else you can drive.
The point being that no matter what you drive, when you start playing online, you're not going to get many kills until you start seeing how things work. Driving one of the two 'Mechs I suggested will help you live long enough to get past the learning curve fairly quickly.

LOL. Actually, this is my primary config that I use about 75% of the time. Don't mind me though...I like to keep things simple. If you can stand the heat, try 6 ERLL on a Sunder and all the heat sinks you can get. This was my old standby until they increased the heat in the last version. 4 ERPPCs actually run a bit cooler than the 6 ERLLs.

Thanks for all the advice! Getting the computer upgraded tomorrow, so I'll be working my way through the campaign shortly!

Bushwhacker and Cauldron-Born are the two BEST General Purpose Chassis out there. I'd suggest trying them out, and modifying the configs until you find the right one for you.

Well. I think a flea teaches you how to pilot mechs well

Beyond that...my first mech was....an Urbanmech.
Chimera is surprisingly decent combo of speed and firepower, blackhawk is probably one of the easier 'point and shoot' mechs, though need some heat management skills

I'll throw my two cents in with the Thor std 2 clan gauss 1 ERL config. Learn to play in that and everything else is gravy.
