ok, i got a new router, the netgear dg834, set it all up, works nice, very shiny etc etc and all was going well

until, i noticed something!

when im idling on msn, and my mom goes upstairs and boots her pc up and logs on msn too, they both start disconnecting (the msn clients) constantly, every 3 or 4 minutes.

we're both using messenger 6.2, firmware on the router is the latest, everything should be working perfectly

so i start playing around a bit, and notice xp has enabled ics.. it has no reason to do this as the router is also a modem plugged directly into the dsl, which every pc then connects to, it's the middle man... so i try and turn ics off, and fail, miserably, xp keeps babbling something about "The internet connection sharing computer is not configured to let network users control or disable the internet sharing connection. this setting can be changed in the advanced properties of the shared connection or the internet connection sharing computer" - so i wander round all the pc's trying to find said advanced properties, and get that same message on each one! that's no good, i have ics enabled on a mystery ghost machine that i cant find smile.gif

any one got any idea how i shut the stupid thing off?

What version of windows? If it's xp try this:

1. Go to the control panel and select network connections.
2. Then right click on your internet connection and select properties from the menu.
3. Click the advanced tab.
4. Make sure that enable internet connection (allow other network users...) sharing option is unchecked, and if it's already unchecked then click cancel and repeat these steps for the other computers.
5. Otherwise click ok.

That should do it. At least it works for dial ups... wink.gif

Ah, I take it you probably only have icf on your advanced tab for your connection? Let me dig around to see what I can come up with. smile.gif

BTW, do you have a sharing tab for your connection?
Jimmy_Kell
yep to icf, nope to sharing
Tyrinon
Lets try this one. smile.gif

1. Open computer management.
2. Click the + sign for services and applications.
3. Then click on services.
4. Go down the list in the box on the right to find ICF/ICS (will not be abbreviated) and right click on it.
5. Left click on Stop (startup type set to manual).

huh.gif Hopefully this works!

*edit* You'll probably want to do this on all the comps in your network. If it doesn't work out, we can always turn it back on. *eoe*
