Full Version: Torso with mouse?

Went online yesterday and I was reminded of just how much I suck. Was kicking ass in single play but of course once I was thrown in with human opponents my lack of skill was apparent.

Many of them said they were using mice for the torso movement and weapons aiming. I do not (yet) as I find it awkward and am still using a mapped keystrole on my controller (TM Cougar). How many here use the mouse or other devices? Do rudder pedals work well?

I use the keyboard and mouse. The mouse (set to torse) is set to fire group one (left click) and to flush coolant (right click). I also use the scroll wheel for forward and reverse.

I previously used mouse and keyboard. But now I use joystick. I'm not sure if this is true to anyone who had the same progression, but i find the mouse easier for aiming. Although the mouse is harder for controlling the mech, while the joystick is the other way around - easier to control the mech (ie. more intuitive) but a little harder to use for aiming.

But i've heard peeps using joystick and mouse combo as well.

Actually i've asked the same question years ago. Too bad i didn't get any information as how i could use my MS pedals to work in MW.

Funny you should start this thread as my joystick recently got so sloppy (it just wore out tantrum.gif ) I have stopped using it and based on "the experts" advice I am now undergoing the transition from da stick to da keyboard / mouse. I find that for torso twist and aiming the mouse RULES but the keyboard movements for the mech leave a good bit to be desired. They tend to be jerky and If someone out there knows a way to soften the left turn / right turn movements on the keyboard please let me know as that's the only downside I experience.

Does not matter wich input device you use , if your new your gonna loose big in the beginning it will pass.
Just use the controller your most comfortable with now .
I use only a stick .
I know good mouse players, stick players and even someone who uses keyboard only, he kicks ass brawling.
For every good mouse player there's a good stick player and vice versa
The best player i knew, evilcow used a old sidewinder(pp2 i think) stick

As an admitted first-person-shooter player, I use mouse for torso twist and aiming and keyboard for movement. I tried a joystick but I felt i couldnt aim as precisely (not that im that great a shot anyway...) I think we keyboarders will be happier in the next few months when superturning is removed.

I have issues with using only a keyboard/mouse: mainly that I want to get into the game and feel like I'm actually piloting and fighting (albeit subparly) with my mech. Some kind of controller setup is manditory to "suspend my disbelief".

I see no reason why rudders should not work with Mercs. You could then use the rudders to control the legs and the joystick for the torso.

I use the mouse for torso twist and aiming. My logitech mousse has 8 buttons so I use them for throttle up & down, look R&L, weapons scroll and target selection with the wheel.
Instead of a joystick, I use a Nostromo N-52 speedpad for turning, zoom Ect.

I use keyboard and mouse, and I have a joystick. I probly didn't give it enough chance, but I just couldn't get good accuracy with the mouse, and being a brawler by heart, fast reflexes with a mouse is really appealing. Also my joystick wouldn't calibrate right either, so I'm thinking of buying that new one thats gonna be coming out. the hundred dollar two piece set, forget what it's called. But the mouse has always worked well for me controlling the torso. Left button fire, right button jumpjets, and scroll to change weapon groups

HMMMM .... the next generation Satek Joystick/throttls combo..... wub.gif

Anybody using rudder pedals for LEG movement? I am seriously considering it.
Didymus
I still just use a twist stick- it feels very natural to use. Although it was kinda weird for a little while, as I hadn't ever played any games where I had actually needed the twist before. It took some time to get used to using the same hand to control all of the turning, the twisting, and the firing, but once I was used to it, it was very convenient.

Not possible, because MS didn't design Mech4 with simmers in mind. You can try and find some sort of software that'd translate pedal-pushing into a throttle setting, but chances are you'd lose Z-axis control on the stick.

I wish it were easier to use a mouse in the context of torso twisting and moveing at the same time; unfortuntely this is not possible, and ignoring one or the other is not an option when brawling. I use a Saitek Cyborg Evo, which has the Z-axis twist, so that I can control both twisting and turning with a single motion. I had a MS Sidewinder before, but problems with accuracy have forced me to switch over.
Gnosis
I think he may have meant turning rather than pedal-leg movement. I used to use it for torso twisting when I had a 2-axis stick and pedals from my flight sims. It was pretty cool actually. cool.gif

Hey Thrash was that due to the deadspot of the stick? It's really starting to bug me.

You too? Stinking deadspot, plus the fact hat the deadspot also affected the kick-in of the resistance motors (was a Force Feedback stick, bad choice, but I was only 13 or 14 and had no idea anyway). You try and make a fine adjustment, and just when you had it right the resistance would kick in and throw the stick off the other direction.
