So hitboxes are the "invisible" mechs we actually fire at, while the images we see are just pretty wrappings that go over the top of the hitboxs that make up a mech? Do I have this correct?

Yes.
Though I swear one of the devs said, way back in the very early Vengeance days, that they did per-polygon hit detection with MW4. That apparently is not the case, though, given the hitbox screenies that MekTek have floated around a couple times now.

Doh! Of course!
Anyway, if what Wad mentioned WAS implemented (in a future version) it would probably make critical hits possible (other than cockpit). That would be cool.
