Because they'd go away everytime you turned off your computer, or detached it from the Internet.

It depends on the computer connection and the use of the computer.
My cable connection has no upload/download limits, and for the first 3 years had a static IP (it's dynamic now), so I had a small website and an FTP site running on a second computer that was always on. If you have the equipment and the connection to do that, it's possible. But for the vast majority of people, it's really not feasible to attempt.

What Lemur said. It is sorta like the arms on Highlander's 'cept instead of just going away, one of the two must be shot off. Unless they are the highlander ghosts of team battles past...

there is another thing I see not mentioned. Generally, if you try to attach a local HD file, the path will be c:\my documents\my picture\my image.jpg and well, we all have a different C: drive.

There is a 'trick' people pull from time to time, linking the image you typed up. Funny to read people saying 'omg how the hell did you hack my computer dude!!!'
