Anyone know for sure if some versions of video drivers are capable of failing to render fog altogether? I've started threads on this before at DropShip Command and MW4Online and was never able to get a definative answer. Perhaps one doesn't exist, but occaisionally I still encounter situations that make me go "Hmmmm....".

My (possibly imperfect) understanding of the situation is that with PR1, M$ eliminated the easy one-line text change "NoFog" feature that was included with the original Mercs. However, those players with the types of video cards that allowed them to eliminate fog in BK and Vengeance can still do so, probably by the same process they did it in those games.

There used to be several brands of video cards that allowed players to eliminate or reduce fog in the set-up and options for the card. I've never looked into it in any great depth, but it's my impression that most of the cards that allowed it were pretty old back when Vengeance came out, and that no one was putting that feature into the newer cards.
If that's correct, then anyone still able to do it would be using an extremely old video card.

Yeah, I'm talking about the drivers that came out about a year or so ago when the graphic card companies were accused of cheating on the synthetic benchmarks. Remember that? I've heard it said that those versions could be configured to reduce or eliminate fog. Neuromancer over at MWL once gave it as the reason all league drops are set to clear. I've never been able to get a final answer on whether this is actually true or not.

I looked into this this weekend and found that my NVIDIA Geforce 3 card has a fog setting that you can check and uncheck, but I have not tried it to see if it works to reduce fog. I'll test this week.

Cool. If its the "Fog Emulation Table" setting, then you may find that checking or unchecking has no effect. If you are interested and have the time, try older versions of your drivers and see if there is any effect.

There are Hacked versions of drivers around for most gfx cards be it Nvidia or ATI. These created a big stir in Tribes, Tribes2, Counterstrike etc enabling people to actually see through walls etc. I see no reason why something as simple (compared to that) as eliminating fog would be difficult.
