Ok I'm not a newbie, and I'm fairly familiar with the game. But I do have an issue that has been bothering me. I have played on several servers (some with mercshield) and have noticed that some users can "see" me (and Hit me) from much farther out that I can see them. I have tested this in several games when I get suspicious and it seems to be consistent. I can see the "trails" from their Weapons but not the actual origin point. Heck I can't even see the the Mountain or Hill or whatever they seem to be standing on. It is freakking invisible. Next thing I know I'm getting hit with Gausse rifles and ERLL (or Missile locks) I know the ranges of the weapons and I know that I can "see" out to at least 800m. (Not so sure about 1200m) The only thing I can think of is that they have managed to turn off the fog table or hack the their view distance. Am I imagining things or are these real client side hacks? It seems to be prevalent.
Note that I am running in 1280x1024 all optionstuned to high on a 2.4gh P4 w1gb RAM and Gforce 4Ti 4200 128MB Ram AA turned off.

Sometimes, if you're standing on the top of a hill against the skyline, you'll be "skylining". Meaning they can see your silhouette against the sky, and can thus plug a few shots into you. Other than that, I heard that some videocards made it so the fog doesn't exist, that may also be what you're experiencing. Dunno really, could be that they have a radar lock on you, or maybe they're just lucky.

BAP, ATM missiles, lt gauss....
I have scored kills with a BAP and shooting light gauss at someone beyond the clipping point. Specially in Manorhouse, where I normally wait to see where the missiles fly from, then I guess where the shooter is.
Some old... very old graphic cards could shut down the fog table emulation. I don't know if doing that with your GeForce 4 will do it. I have a Ti4400. The option is in the advanced display settings. I think the fog table is locked in the game now. If you find something make sure to come back here and document.

Basically the lights, skylining, where shot came from, water movement, previsously shadow, crashing trees, lightsource behind a mech, etc. all give away a position ... especially if opponent is keen enough or happen to zoom/scan a particular area.
But i'd like to share this too.
Me and my friend tested this before. Yes, there is a difference between different systems.
My friend had a better PC than i am and running at higher resolutions and higher depth. But basically he could see me before i see him at about 50 to 100m more. We're moving straight at each other in a heavy fog environment w/ us both zoomed w/ radar on. I couldn't see any silhoutte or any "lights" even if i could see the 'red box'. While he could see both my mech and the 'red box'.
I'll re-test and post a picture later to demonstrat/show what i mean (i got two PCs of different generation).

Hmmmm, weird. No 'advantage' whatsover in either PCs!
Hmmm, either my friend is joking me or there's something wrong w/ his video card.

Thanks For the replies, I 'll clarify that I am specifically referring to shots that happen beyond the clipping distance. what usually happens is, I respawn, I scan the area for where my teammates are I walk in the general direction, then POW. I'm getting slammed. I check 3rd person view to see where its coming from and thats when I've noticed the shots form beyond clipping. (I 'm aware of skylining and following my weapon trails and account for that. ) At first I thought is was a poptarter but as I closed in to investigate its usually some Mech standing on a Hillside (not skylining).
I need to keep track of this more and hopefully I will be able to provide more detail. As noted by a previous posterI have noticed it on the Manorhouse map as wel as the Paradise (Open field) maps.
Maybe its just me and I need to start using Lt Gauss rifles more.....

On Coliseum, I couldn't see past 1000 m until I got my new video card... I think...

Also realize that at an angle you can see farther then straight ahead.... if walking through a big map with mountains you'll notice that the mountains in your peripheral vision apear first but if you turn towards them, they fade out... jsut somethign else they could be doing.
Sliv.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that, I use that all the time, but it's become ingrained now, and so I don't even think about it when I do it.

are you passive? are you running ecm? I regularly get kills at 999 meters with a bapped mech and lgauss in fog. If I can get radar lock, or if it's a stationary missile mech, then I can find a person.
but, I do remember that you used to be able to take fog off.

Just remember, "angled view reach glitch" is only good in clear maps.
Nice to bring this out, forgot about this ... i almost always leave the scouting to my teammates early on anywayz

On some maps you can still tell the shadows, but not the actual mech silouette, by using the "peripheral view" thing.

I thought the "shadow glitch" was already fixed?

They fixed it??
Er,,, well, I noticed it doesn't happen as often now as in Vengeance. But going as far as saying "fixed"...
