A couple of you might remember the Deimos model I did last year. I decided to redo it in greater detail a few days ago, and here's what I've got so far. Constructive criticism appreciated, except about that one leg, which is still very much unfinished. smile.gif

You are BEYOND my ability, I cannot offer any critique. Awesome!

Cool! A uni-mech. Will look neat hopping around the battlefield. laugh.gif

Very sweet as usual bro. biggrin2.gif

What I know about 3D modelling you could fit in a thimble, so can I just comment on the 'Mech design? cool.gif

I really like the design of the grill-type area there on the front of the torso. That gives it a really distinctive look. I also like the way you integrated that missile rack into the top there. It's obviously a missile rack, but it looks well-protected as well, you know? Those things that look like cooling fins on the backs of the arms really work well, and the single-missile launcher on the outside of the left arm is very cool.

I guess my only criticism would be with the cockpit. Maybe it's just because I'm a dirty third person player, but I'd like to have some kind of peripheral vision when I'm sitting in the driver's seat. Any way to slide the cockpit forward a few feet and put some small side windows in there?

Technically if this were a Battletech 'mech and not a Mechwarrior 'mech ( eek13.gif There's a difference), it wouldn't need the side windows, because the 'mech has many screens in it, which gives the pilot a 360 degree field of view. tongue.gif You wouldn't have to look out the side windows as you do in Mechwarrior, just have to glance at the screen that corresponds with the side you want. tongue.gif

Personally, I like the flat, protected, not stand-outish cockpit, reminds me a bit of the Thanatos, but I do see what 'Card is talking about, and if this were to be a MW 'mech, that would probably be a good thing to do, otherwise you'd be blind (which is why I don't like the Hunchie (can't see out the right side, and I'm a 1st person junkie tongue.gif ) ) to the sides. cool.gif

Gnosis: "...it wouldn't need the side windows, because the 'mech has many screens in it, which gives the pilot a 360 degree field of view."

Well... yes and no.

In the original Battletech source material (going way back to the days when there were only 12 'Mechs here) the neurohelmet was described as more of a complete sensory input and control gizmo - kind of like Walter Jon William's Panzerboys and Deltajocks "riding the 'face" in Hardwired.

MechWarriors got a 360* degree view, sensors, status monitors, all that jazz, pumped right into their brains, basically. Of course, then the obvious question became "So why do 'Mechs have windshields at all?" To which, in those days, we always answered "Because FASA bought the art from other people."

Then when FASA started catering more to the hardcore geek detail-boys, and they started rolling out the fiction, the neurohelmet got demoted more to some big bulky thing that pretty much just reads the MechWarrior's 'balance'. The actual control of the 'Mech was done by pulling levers and handles and joysticks and thingies. BUT, like you said, they still had a wide-angle view from those screens - so I'm still wondering, why do the things have windshields at all?

But if you're going to be consistent with other Battlemechs, then you have to have a windshield, for whatever reason. I'm just thinking that if you have to have one, a side view would be nice. cool.gif
Quarzark
hmm... lets question the Timberleggers about his missin leg eh?
ThrashDog
Okay, I went over to the Timberliners, and asked for the other leg back, and they were very generous and even gave me two feet to go with it! Thank you, Timberliners! biggrin2.gif

Hrrm, guess you're right. Not a lot of peripheral vision in that cockpit. I'll see if there's a way to put some side windows into the cockpit without messing up the lines too much.

single-missile launcher on the outside of the left arm is very cool.

That's a machine gun, stupid! tongue.gif There are four of them, one each in the right or left torso, and one in each arm. Now, before you say, "Machine guns!?! eek13.gif " I have to say that they may seem useless, but they're not. Really!!

And the brief history there, 'Card, was very instructive. I was always wondering why in the Blood of Kerensky trilogy, pilots got a holographic 360-degree dispay, but in later books, they're stuck looking out the windshield.

Oh, and because I have it lying around, a MegaMek ZIP file for it: Deimos MegaMek ZIP file

Specs:

Deimos
IS Level 2, 50 tons
6/9/0 movement (XL Engine)

1 Large Pulse Laser
2 Medium Pulse Lasers
1 SRM 6
4 Machine Guns

Ohhhhhhhhhh!

*peers really closely at image*

Ummm... are you sure? cool.gif

So the fins coming off of the barrels are for cooling purposes? OK. I can see that.

A single-shot missile launcher (for arty beacons and other assorted nastiness) would still be kind of cool out there though. cool.gif
ThrashDog
Yeah, I can see how they could be confused. They were supposed to be Uziel-like, but I gess that got lost.
shiv
Nice!

But still liked the idea of the pogo stick of doom with the one leg. laugh.gif
KnightofStromgald
Very Kool way beyond me think if I were to make a mech would involve much cardboard and lots of ducktape. smile.gif
