How on earth do you get an object without a background? I see all these pictures of mechs nicely cut out of their origional positions... I cant figure out how you do it!

Please, I'm beggin here. mecry.gif

Well...people usually take a screenshot of a 'mech on a sort of green-screen map (I use a pure pink map, some people use blue ones.). They then load the screenshot into their favorite image editing software, and grab the 'Magic Wand Tool', click on the pink/blue background to select it, then hit the delete key.

Hmm...I've got Photoshop open right now, I'll see if I can make a sort of image-tutorial. tongue.gif

here are a couple

copy the image to a new picture that has a transparent background then..

1.) (not so easy way) go in and remove the background 1 pixels at a time.

2.) (really easy way) use a graphics program to delete the background, like in Paint Shop Pro use the magic wand.

Okay...here we go. biggrin2.gif

Step 1:

First, you'll want a picture of a 'Mech against a green screen type map. (Pinkmap in my case, which, I dunno where to get it from, so you'll probably use Big Blue (a blue map)).

Step 2:

After loading the image into your favorite photo/image editor (Photoshop for me.), you'll want to crop the image down to a small box around the 'mech. Taking the crop tool, create a small box that contains the mech.

Step 3:

Now, grab the Magic Wand tool, and click into the pink area around the 'mech. This should select the majority of the pink around your Loki. Should it not, then increase the Tolerance on the tool properties and try again. You want to get most of the pink, but not any of the 'mech.

After the pink has been selected, hit your Delete key, and away it goes. Now, you'll notice little 'holes' in the 'mech where pink shows through. That's okay, click on those and delete them as well.

Now, there may be slight pink jaggies surrounding the 'mech, but again, that's okay. I usually go and make a new layer below the Loki, and fill it with white (or a color different from those of the jaggies, one that will make them stand out.). I then take a 1-px square eraser, and delete the jaggies one by one.

Finished:

That should be about what you end up with (with the checker board being transparent).

Woo! Anyway, there are other ways to do it...I personally find that the easiest, but others may do it other ways. If you've got a screenshot you just absoloutley love, but it's not on a green-screen map, that's okay too....just erase a 1-px border around the 'mech, then grab the magic wand, make the tolerance 255, then click the area outside of the 1-px empty border, then hit delete.

Gnosis has given you the right way to clear out the background, but there are a couple of very important steps here that you need to do first, before you do that.

When you open your editing program, you need to first create a "new" document. Then make sure that you select a transparent background.

then... what I do is open the file with the mech, use my rectangular marquee tool to select it quickly, then do a cut and paste into the new document. I magic wand away, and there should be your mech sans background.

Final step should be once you've done doing whatever it is you are doing, make sure that you save your image as a .gif, and make sure to look for the settings that allows you to preserve transparencies.

What program are you using, maybe can be a bit more specific if I knew which one

blink.gif No, actually...you don't. tongue.gif But you can also do it that way.

But I did miss something...

In order to get the transparency, you have to create a new transparent layer, then drag it below the layer labeled "Background". Then you'll still get your transparency. smile.gif And it has to be done just as you open the image. tongue.gif

Many ways to create a trans layer.

Fury is right, Gnosis is right too.

AND

In PSP8 you can drage the background layer (the screenshot) and PSP will tell you it has to be promoted to such and such if you say yes (with an option to not bother asking you ever again) it will add a trans layer below the screenshot.
