Ok, lets try this. When was the last time it worked? What was done to the computer between then and when it stopped working?

Also, what type of connection, modem, cable, DSL?

Step one: Chill out. Lay off the coffee and sugar. Listen to some Enya. Take a few deep breaths. Come back in a few hours, giving the technical people enough time to figure it out.

If I remember correctly, you used to be able to connect?

What changed?

- You have a PC connected to a cable modem.
- No firewall software (this is not good).
- WinXP firewall turned off (I don't like that firewall anyway).
- Accepted some update? What was it? Microsoft broadband thingy, need more details. Who is your ISP / cable provider? It isn't M$ and I have a feeling that what ever that software is, it killed your connection.

Microsoft offered no updates related to anything ICS, IP stack or any other core functionality this week or even last week. The updates were a PKI Cert fix, the Workstation Service, an I.E. security update du-jour, Win API control box update, ActiveX update (activex bad, m'kay), another local BO problem, yet another BO in Messenger Service (which you should have turned off anyway) and other patches this month were for Medai Player and I.E. (again).

On the topic of firewalls, consider using this. ZoneAlarm Basic. It's free and works VERY well.

If you install it, be sure to run MW4 in a window, not full screen, this way you will see the pop up from ZA asking if you want to allow MW4 network access, click yes and the check box to remember your choice for future play. If you are full screen, you will never see the popup and it will look like your system locked up.

Did Microsoft turn on the firewall in one of those updates? Should double check those settings again if you have not.

No. They haven't ever turned it on for you as it would break tons of corporate systems participating in Active Directory Domains thus unleashing a massive cry by their own customers against the auto-update system.

Was a thought. I know they have been taking some heat recently for not enabling basic security on new installs. And I guess it was AOL that sent out an update that disabled the messenger service. (finally!)

Yeah, it would block ports 135, 137 and 139 which would kill all windows networking functions (yayyy!!!) and things like domain logins, file and print sharing, etc, would die.

AOL did have an update that killed the messenger (I wanted to say that) service which is really a useless service to begin with. I guess someone at M$ thought they needed an equivelant to the walld service on unix systems, something turned off by default and never used anymore.
