wassup tb, im 7th Seal. ive just gotten mercs, but im not a n00b to mw itself. i play alot of vengeance and bk, but mercs is a bit different. if you guys could help me learn some basics, since i havent really dealt with heat and ammo, and even map tactics i would be greatful. from what i have read on your site so far, it seems that you guys are tactical geniuses. im hopin to get on a tb server this weekend, so maybe ill see you out there. im hopin that everything installs ok but if i have problems, you will be the first to know. thanks guys

mercs n00b that needs friends

Make sure you stop by the Training Center. These guys have guides for almost everything, and everyone adds a little bit of knowledge every once in a while. If you are not new to mechwarrior games there even may be something you could add.

To me, Mercs' main difference with Vengeance and BK is the heat. Energy weapons give more heat. Lots of it. Canadian players don't use it because it melts the national monuments. Some ranges have been changed, PPCs, mainly. And you'll see a lot of mechs jumping. I guess that if you're good at staying alive and a sneaky fighter you will do fine.

Hopefully the one with the information will post where you can get the full set of maps that are in use as well. I think it was posted on another thread but have not found it again. (is it pinned somewhere?)

Other than that get on the servers and play. That's what I did and look at me now. (I'm that crumpled stomped on raven that you find all over the servers. )

And the secret to handling the poptarters is to use flares. Lots and lots of flares!

Welcome 7th! I have to say, you've gotten in on the game during a time when some think things are fixing to rock, and some think things are going to hell in a handbasket, but everyone agrees that everything is anything but dull. Hope you like excitement!

So far it sounds like everyone is steering you in the right direction. The Banzai Institute is probably one of the best places for you to be.... so long as you're like the rest of us and certifiably crazy . As for the tactical genius bit..... well, flattery gets you everywhere, dear! The guides are a great place to start, of course... but be prepared to witness those folks that wrote them blatantly ignoring everything they said in them on the servers. Sometimes the guides can be a little over a person's head (at least they were mine), if you don't have a lot of experience in game. Best way to solve that problem is to get your feet wet and jump on a server. The BI servers are extremely popular, and I've sometimes waited 30 minutes or more to get on one, but with great patience comes great rewards. A word of warning, however.... unless you're a 'Mech Prodigy, a sound pummeling will occur. Happens to me every time. Still, there is usually *always* someone wearing [TB] tags in there, and if you have any questions at all don't hesitate to ask. Aside from having a good time, that's what they're there for. Once you have a feel for what you like, or think you like.... the guides become your friends. As do the forums.

So, once you have Mercs, there's only a couple of things left to do...

Make sure you have the PR1 patch. If not, you can get it HERE .
Just click the DOWNLOAD NOW underneath the Game Update heading. Of course, you may have this already. If so, just ignore this bit .

Get in a mech, get comfy, and come see us on the servers.

Then, considering the time is close at hand, read all you can about the upcoming third party patch being released by MekTek. This patch has created quite a stir, and is going to change the face of the game. There will be several new mechs added, new weapons, and some updates to some classics already out there. As most of the leagues have already stated they will be adopting this patch, it's a safe bet that finding a non-patched server after it's release will be pretty uncommon.

Welcome 7th! I must say you are taking a good first step by asking questions before playing. The more questions you ask, the better a player you will become. That and alot of practice.

Feel free to stop by the NBT servers sometime aswell when you feel comfortable with the game. Just remember to read the server rules before playing.

Anyway, judging from Sliverthorn's "troutzooka" - is this supposed to be a gun that fires trouts? Hmmm ... what kind of charge does it use? If it is supposed to have a range of more then 5 meters, one could safely guess that you would have to use an explosive charge, which would shred the trout to pieces, and only fire a cloud of fish-smithereens.
That, and you would have to clean the barrel after each shot. So, it should better be called a "mess-zooka" cause all it makes is a giant mess. Would be easier to throw the trout at someone, better range and less splashing your teammates. And you could store the trouts in something less obvious, labeled "stale cookies" - then seal wouldn't go after them. Why, and that's the main question here, would you want to fire trouts at someone in the first place?

Actually the troutzooka is like those human cannon ball cannons. You can get some nice range with those.
