Full Version: AMD chip overheat

Thought I saw someone post this here. Have a AMD Athlon 850 that for some reason keeps trying to cook itself. Fortunatly the MB knows to shut the box down or the CPU would make eggs of itself. What type of heatsink are people using for hot AMD's? This is a file server that is always on and the office has limited cooling. The system has several fans but I obviously need to upgrade the heatsink to something better and with a fan on top.

Responses greatly appreciated! smile.gif

Firstly make sure that the current Heatsink and Fan are securely attached on the chip and the fan is still good. Is the current HSF the original retail fan ? Is the the proper amount of thermal grease between the chip and heatsink ?
If so you shouldn't be having this problem if it is working properly, is there enough airflow in the box? what is the ambient temp in the room ?
Earlier Tbirds like yours ran notoriously hot.

If you are sure that it is all working properly and the current heatsink-fan does not do the job. I suggest you take a look at this one

Here
and make sure you get some good thermal grease like Arctic Silver

It's a home built system, used CPU from a dead MB, putting this one together from several system graveyards. The current sink is evenly greased, not too much, not too little. Same sink it came with, a tighter box and small MB than before. PS has a fan, box has a fan in back and front (installed this extra one to combat heat problem).

The old box had a channel for the CPU, I don't have that option in this one, no room to the sides but the top of the CPU has room to spare. That's why I was thinking a new sink with fan. I don't want to have to worry about it later as a fire hazard, so I was looking for a sink someone has had good experience with on a very hot CPU like this.

a new sink with fan.

The CPU doesn't have a fan?!?!

Get most any HS with fan and you should be fine. cool.gif

OK, cool. Thanks.

for a good inexpensive and fairly quiet for the 800 try this http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.asp?...rchFor=ti-s8640

The thermal integration HSF is a good performer and at that price can't be beat.

Also make sure the fans in the box are oriented correctly. Should have one fan (most likely the one in front) sucking air into the case and the fan on the back pushing air out of the case. If they are both exhausting air or sucking air you won't have the air circulation you need for the heat sink to do its job.
