Ok, I've asked this question before in other places and haven't been able to get a definitive answer, so I'll try here. I'm wanting to set up a server, just 12-14 players. Now, what should the upload and download speeds be to run this? Currently I have DSL and it with the upload rated at 128k, I can only handle three players before it gets laggy. I'm looking at getting Road Runner, but is this capable of handling a dedicated server?

Poe,

A good guy to ask is ICEMAN he should be at practice tonight and he has a dedicated server. I switched from DSL to cable in the hopes of doing it but I have never been happy with the performance. But I have noticed downgraded performance in almost all servers due to all the worms and crap out there.

I do beleive that ice pays for extra bandwidth

I've hosted from Chile 12 player games with a 128k upload speed over adsl with no problems. Players reported the game was smooth, even if they were all in the US. What you do need is a decent amount of RAM. How much do you have?

Currently I'm running:
AMD 1800XP
WinXP Pro
384mb PC133
20GB 5200rpm hd
catzcradle
Something odd this way goes. If you host from the game, it will show you bandwidth usage. I have 128K up, and 12 players gets to around 110-120K which is my limit. I've hosted 12 without a hitch. Should be fine for what you have unless your are not getting 128K. Check dslreports.com I think it is and test your speed. If it isn't what it's supposed to be, talk to your provider.

Thanks for the link Catz, there's a lot of cool stuff on there cool.gif

I get 587kbps down / 95kbps up eek13.gif

To a server in LA. (I'm near Chicago)

Yes, the RAM's ok. Could be more, but it's alright to host 12.

Thanks Cat, I'll run those tests when I get home. As far as the system specs, I'm "hoping" to get a new mobo and some faster memory to go along with it pretty soon.

Well, the test results from DSLReports.com are:

1200k up /134k down
