Instant Messaging Port Information

Defaults posted here, though, ICQ, AIM and YIM will wander ports in an attempt at finding a way out of a possibly firewalled network.

AIM: TCP-5190
Host: login.oscar.aol.com

ICQ: TCP-5190
Host: login.icq.com

MSN: TCP-1863
Host: messenger.hotmail.com

YIM: TCP-80
Host: cs.yahoo.com

IRC: IRC connects to many different servers and requires that you have Identd running. Normal port use is 6667 but MANY other configs are possible. What I'm really trying to say is, the standard ports are, not standard. Except the Identd port.

If you are having problems with connections from a possibly firewalled network, change the port to 80 (http port, aka web traffic) as most nets allow this to go through. Remember that if your company has a policy against chat use and you do something to get around the devices that are supposed to stop it, you could lose your job, so use this info wisely.

Also, all major chat services are unencrypted and are VERY easily captured and read. Trillian can be configured to encrypt traffic for AIM & ICQ users. Not sure why MSN is not in the list, surprisingly, MSN is very helpful to the folks who write Trillian to make sure Trill works with MSN.

I just tried the Enable DMZ Host in my LinkSys router. Firewall & AV both up. Finally got on Yarr. smile.gif Just remember to Unable when done playing.

I know it's not the best solution but it works the best for me. unsure.gif Least amount of abberrant behaviour & hassle.

Tried the port settings, something was not right, maybe the firewall. mad.gif

Anyway, this worked.

Yeah, that is a way to get it to work. The downside is not having a firewall at that time. I run ZoneAlarm on my systems even thought my NetGear boxen also firewalls. I've taken the broadband firewall down before for the same reason you illustrated. Good advice, both in use and removing the setting when done playing.

I'm using a NetGear wireless router. Do I just put in "1863" just like I did for the MW4 ports?
Wildcard
Yeah, on a Netgear router when you open (for example) Port 1000, it opens both the UDP and TCP ports.

Just curious if I can close my 1025 port without a firewall?

I have that same router and do not have to open anything to get it to work. I posted it there as an FYI in case anyone ran a personal firewall that is really just a filter and they needed to know what port to open.

Sort of. You can turn on the packet filtering in Win2K and WinXP but you have to tell it ALL the ports you want open instead of putting in what ports to close. What is running on 1025?

I gotta thank you all for this bit o' help! Looked all over MekTek's forum and didn't find anything as complete as this post.

I was having trouble getting a second computer to connect to the same server game but kept getting rejected. Noticed that my computer was showing pings for the servers but #2 wasn't so figured that it was port 28800 was the problem but couldn't figure out a way around that until I read this post, discovered DXport, downloaded to both computers and... VOILA! Fix the 2302-2400 port range with the DXport assignments and forward said ports on the router to the appropriate computers!

THANKS AGAIN!! wink.gif

Now I can whoop some buttcrack on my son (=WW=JeetKungPao... aka =WW=iDieVeryGood) on servers with smart humans instead of LAN play with stupid bots!
Lonewolf
If you play Ghost Recon or want to play it in the future, remember to stop DXPort. Only for multiplayer, that is.

You'll find some sample configs for some routers over there:

http://www.gamespyarcade.com/helpers/workshop/routers/

Even if your model isn't mentioned, you might be able to guess the config by looking at the examples and brewders post
at the beginning of this thread. biggrin2.gif

Just read the port open and close etc for Mech 4 MERCS.. I don't understand how you can set a port at
34000-44000 (just an example) I have XP Pro with DSL and a Sprint 645 DSL modem, and I'm firewalled.

Even when I take down the firewall I can't connect to Multi.. I can see the board and server games, but still not connect to the games.. I get an error on the screen about server down.. I have tried to input the port settings as listed, but still nothing.

Please explain how in steps, with XP Pro..
Brewder
The OS shouldn't matter very much. By the term firewalled I assume you mean you have a DSL Router/Firewall? In this case what you are doing it port forwarding to your gaming system.

If you have a router, this is what a NetGear system would look like. Click on the "Port Forwarding" link to get to this.
Angaels
I don't have a router.. I only have a DSL Sprint 645 modem that plugs into the phone jack and my computer is directly connected to the modem.. That's as far as it goes.. I don't have a router unless the modem is also a router.. To my knowledge it is not..

There is no Port Forwarding to choose. When I input the settings, I go to Control Panel and select Network Connections, and there is listed my Local Area Connection which says 'Enabled, Firewalled' it is connected through SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter.. I then go to Change Settings, and Select the Advanced Tab where it says Internet Connection Firewall with a box that is checked. Below it is settings which is where I added the port and IP info given for MERCS.. As I said before everytime I tried it did not work.. Am I looking in the wrong area?
Brewder
OK, this makes sense. The XP firewall isn't so bad for some things but from my knowledge it only blocks incoming connections. No outbound connections are blocked so I don't understand why you cannot connect to servers. Can you turn this off for a little bit and try connecting and post back?

If this works and it is the XP firewall blocking you, I recommend you use a slightly more intelligent firewall. The one from ZoneLabs, ZoneAlarm the free version.

If you install this, you will need to start MW4 not as a full screen. ZA will ask to allow certain apps to connect to the network, you need to answer yes to them and click on the setting that makes it remember your answer. If you start MW4 in full screen mode, you will never see the ZA prompt and it will seem as if you system is locked.
Thylacine
I don't have XP pro. Are talking about the XP firewall? Just disable it. Zone Alarm is much easier to deal with, in XP home IMO. I made a new install of XP to my D drive, loaded mercs all the stuff that goes with it, TS2 and AIM, J-stick drivers, and thats it for that drive. Disabled the firewall NO A.V. nothing I do not need for playing. I think my playing has been better for it.
Angaels
Ok,

Tried without the Firewall and still no success.. I entered into the Zyxel Web Configurator through entering the IP address of my ISP.. 192.168.1.2... That got me to NAT Network Address Translation which when clicked on it has sort of what you mentioned on the Netgear.. But there are no numbers for Start Port - End Port - IP Address.. They are all at zero.. Sort of a numbered graph setting top to bottom with #1 saying all ports under Start Port and End Port with zeroes on IP Address.. I tried entering my IP address and some port entries I found for Zone settings (Which differ depending on what DirectX Directplay I am using 7 or 8. Niether of them worked ..
Brewder
You found what you need to configure. That modem is also a router running PAT (port address translation) and what you need to do is configure it to forward those ports shown at the top of this thread to your pc at home. I don't have any experience with that modem you have but feel free to ask for help.
Angaels
EUREKA!!!

My knowledge has grown a bit now.. It's pretty weird how it works.. But what I have to do is connect to my modem through IE.. Then I can configure it.. But, the Firewall for XP Pro did have to come down (atleast until I can figure out how to configure it to accept incoming info, which shouldn't be too hard).. I downloaded ZoneAlarm, and everything worked fine at first.. When I went on MERCS and I actually played one game.. The whole time I am on my desktop though Zone is asking me a TON of questions to approve 'this or that' going out.. After awhile I tried re-entering MERC Multi and it would freeze on me.. I'm thinking it's a setting I may or may not have activated.. Not sure, but whenever I turn Zone of and I'm DMZ, MERCS runs fine on Multi.. But I don't want to leave it like that.. Have you ever come across a problem like this??

BY THE WAY THANK-YOU'S GO OUT TO BOTH OF YOU GUYS FOR THE HELP!!! I'm one of those tinkering kind of guys that doesn't give up, and with your help I did it..

Any further info would be appreciated..
Thylacine
Set Zone to remeber access for al the mechwarrior stuff. It looks like it freezes but I bet there is a pop up under it asking if you want to allow such and such to connect. Check the box to remember and say yes.

Does anyone know which ports are needed in order to host?
DesertStorm®
bought a NetGear DG834 modem/router/firewall today. I managed to do the port forwarding and I get something weird.

I can use my browser, msn, TS and even connect to zonematch, but I can't join any server. Does anyone have an idea? blink.gif

Check for an updated firmware for the router.
Double- and triple-check that you have all the ports required by Mercs opened up. You need both the Mercs-specific ports and the DirectPlay specific ports. It's all in the readme.
DesertStorm®
Thanks Wad I just needed to set the firewall to run with the rules I defined in the "port forwarding" section tongue.gif
MechSpecOps
I set my ports to these numbers,
..MW4...27999..27999...192.168.0.x
2..MW4...28800..29100...192.168.0.x
3..MW4....2300....2400...192.168.0.x
4..MW4....6073....6073...192.168.0.x
5..MW4....9999....9999...192.168.0.x
6..MW4...47624..47624...192.168.0.x
7..TS12....8765....8767...192.168.0.x
8...RW.....3782....3783...192.168.0.x

And it work for 20 mins but as soon as I got off the game will not connect.

It pops up with the error message "Server Gone or Networking Problem"

This is driving me crazy tantrum.gif

And I did turn off the Fire wall
Hazmat
If you can get in a game and play, it's not a port problem. Your being unable to reconnect after leaving the game may be a connection issue, dropped packets or bad nodes in the connection between you and the server. This problem happens on Ronin? Maybe you want to start another thread and we can work on it.
DemonicDominic
I've followed your wonderful advice so far and I've managed to connect to game servers, and even join games.
PROBLEM: I'm the only one there, even when I know there was a battle raging. The only other mechs I can see are 'bot mechs and they just sit there. After a few minutes of this, I get kicked off the server.
I've done the port forward bit (I don't understand the 192.168.0.x bit. My local computer address is 192.168.1.10).
I've also dropped my Norton Firewall for the duration just to be sure, although I haven't dropped the router Firewall (ie set up a DMZ).
Should I drop the router firewall and make a DMZ too? I don't want to be completely naked to the world while playing.
Azariel
I'm currently having the same problem. I thought it might have something to do with low connection speed. But the strange part is that Ive never had any trouble with it.

Another one of the problems talked about here, also occured on my system. I got in (had the problem described above) signed out, and then couldnt even get into a game.

Another strange thing is that I used to be able to connect normally, only had to port forward 2300-2400 alongside with DXport. But now that ive installen MP3 its all getting annoying on me...
RattlerGUNZ
I had the same problem "Cannot join the selected game. There may be networking problems or the server may be gone."
I have a Linksys router and I just updated the firmware to v1.00.9 from 1.00.6, it fix the problem of port forwarding.
I put MW4Mercs.exe in application and the ports are 2300 to 2400 UDP/TCP. I can now join any server and play online. BTW in any Linksys router in the Administration section Disable UPnP.

Fukushu
Ok, I am having serious problems with the port forwarding for this game. I have a D-Link DGL-4300 router. Below is an image of the port forwaring setup, And i would like to know what goes where.

What do i put in the name box? MW4, MW4Mercs, Or MW4Mercs.exe?
Also I can only use one MW4 definition, I cannot set for 1,2,3,4 and so on.
Another question. Is this whole setup router specific or no?

If anyone could help me out with this i would be grateful.

Thanks
Archlight
Hi Fukushu!

From looking at that picture, looks like you can pull the name from the drop down to the right. Most likely MW4Mercs.exe is what you want.

For IP, you find that from the router's DHCP table. Use the IP that the router assigns to the computer you are running Mercs on.

You'll want to open up the ports listed in the first post of the thread by using a port range format separated by commas like the "Mixed" type in the description on that page.

As to adding "definitions" I'm not sure whether you mean separate computers or different port ranges. For separate computers, just use the appropriate IP address and hopefully you can set up the same exe to forward to multiple computers.

The format of the way to do all this depends on the router, the idea itself is pretty standard across the board.

Hope this helps.
Fukushu
Hey Archlight. Thanks for responding, But i have had no luck so far. I'm getting server may be gone or networking problem Error. As for the pull down menu, No form of MW4 exists within it. I have also tried (just out of curiosity) enabling the DMZ, and Upnp (universal plug and play). Still no luck with either of them. dropped my firewall, turned off WPA encryption......and nothing. Below i have an image of how i have my port forwarding set up. I need to know if i have the TCP and UDP numbers correct.

Below is an image of the mekmatch lobby. I would like to know if anything looks funky or not correct, such as version number, and so on.

Thanks again.
Thunderbolt
Hey bro I can't speak for the settings but the lobby pic is dead on exactly how it looks on mine and I can connect. I know it's not much but there ya go. biggrin2.gif
Archlight
Fukushu, Have you tried connecting directly via whatever modem you have and not through the router just as a test? That might serve to locate the issue. maybe something on the computer itself isn't playing nice.

Also, I believe according to a post above that Upnp should be turned off.
Fukushu
OK Guys, I FINALLY got it! It seems that my DSL modem not only needed a firmware upgrade, But i had to forward the ports on it as well, and enable IP pass through. Also the way i had the ports forwarded for this router were completely wrong. The following TCP, UDP port numbers are as follows:

TCP
1) 2300-2400
2) 6073
3) 28800-2900
4) 6667
5) 47624

UDP
6) 6667
7) 28800-2900
8) 2300-2400

Another thing i wanted to mention was that tech support for D-Link was totally useless. During my calls to them, i got disconnected, got someone i could barely understand, or got some dumb kid that was too busy chatting it up and giggling like some little school girl with his buddy. dry.gif Only after extensive Googleing did i find the answers that i required.

I do really appreciate the help though guys. Thanks
Archlight
Glad you got it working man! Have fun!
Arrgghh!
Alright, I will apologize in advance for being a total noob when it comes to this port forwarding stuff.

I believe I understand that opening the MW4 ports will drop the "Unable to connect to server. There may be networking issues...etc." error from my worries, but unfortunately I have no idea how to open those ports. I do not understand how to engage this oh so fabled port forwarding, or in my terms, I have no idea what the first page is telling me to do unsure.gif . I have a D-Link DI-604 Router and no idea how to engage port forwarding on it, I should probably stop stressing the issue now.

Can somebody savvy with this stuff help me out a bit, please?
